fight gum disease

An easy way to fight gum disease is to floss daily...

Flossing is inexpensive, painless and takes only a few minutes aday. Despite this, approximately 65 percent of American households purchasedental floss while only a little over 10 percent actually floss on a regularbasis. Many people avoid thetask because they consider the hassle and time spent flossing to outweigh itsvital importance to overall oral health.

The list of excuses for not flossing is endless, but according toa new study published in the Journal of Periodontology, it is imperativethat flossing becomes a part of our daily hygiene routine. Researchers compared the effects of flossing twice dailyand toothbrushing vs. brushing alone in sets of twins (who shared the sameenvironmental factors, such as diet, health, and life practices). The resultswere astonishing as the group that flossed had 38% fewer bleeding gum sitesthan before the intervention, and overall gum bleeding improved by an averageof 42%.
